Shopocalypse
For the past year, maybe a little longer then that I am not sure. But I have been becoming more and more aware of the stupid amounts of stuff we buy all the time for no reason. We buy because we are bored, we buy because its fun, and we buy because we have grown up with this inward mentality that more is always better. This thought is only the beginning first flaky layer of a huge huge disgusting topic. We buy, because its there so why not buy it. We never actually stop and think about how that product actually got into our hands. To us the thing we are buying has had no future until we pay for it at the cash register. It just appeared in a place where we can easily view it and where we can easily take it home. But I have some bad news for you those hundreds of thousands of products laying on the shelves in supermarkets, there lives did not just begin there.
Those products started out in conditions we cant even compromise. To us when we hear about Hard labor in other countries, we think yeah i guess they might get $3.50 instead of our minimum wage of $5.50. Nope! To our 5.50 an hour they are getting 13 cents and hour. Not only that, they are horribly tortured if they mess up.
When I first heard about this, my skin began to crawl as i look all around me at the hundreds of THINGS that stared me in the face. I became sick to my stomach. My favorite shirt from Bangladesh, was now a thirteen year old girl bruised, broken, and tired. Just trying to make enough money to live through the day. I began to think to myself have I ever truly wondered if i was going to survive through the day? Of coarse not, because at the end of the day I know i will have as many things as my hearts desire because of that girl who works her fingers to the bone so i can have another pair of my favorite flat shoes. AHHHHHHHHHHHH! How can we live like this. Its over for me I have truly become aware of all the major pain in suffering our needy selfish lives bring and i cant stand another second of it. I cant believe how foolish I was.
This evening I watched a movie called "What Would Jesus Buy?" , now its about this activist group that goes around during Christmas and tries to get people not to buy all the needless stuff people buy during the holidays. There was a lot of weird costumes, and a lot of strange performances in the movie but it had a wonderful meaning. It truly shows you how many lives we are ruining by living the way we do. This film was definitely the straw that broke the camels back for me.
Of coarse this is only just another flaky layer to even bigger topics. There is a world hurting out there, and not just from one thing. Hundreds and hundreds of evil things are happening to are hurt and dying world. All I ask is that you at least think about what you are paying for, at least just remember the ones that made it who dont get to reap the benefits of it at ALL.
If you have to buy (It's going to happen eventually) ,buy something made in the U.S. you know are work environments and we have a lot of labor laws so you know what you are buying was made with the regular amount of sweat.
Well I will stop shouting at you today, but don't think that when you wake up tomorrow everythings going to be fine. Live to Love and Love to Live.
